The Impact of Evolving Output Media on the Design and Creation of Graphic Images
Bigger Monitors
There is a big difference in having a larger monitor than having a smaller monitor. You can have a higher resolution which means that the quality is going to be better. Having a higher resolution also means that you can zoom in further than you would be able to with a smaller resolution. On a smaller resolution the picture would become quickly pixelated and look terrible. The only problem with buying a bigger monitor is that they are very expensive. To buy an LCD monitor with a 19" viewing size, it would cost you about £300. If you want to buy an HD (High Definition) monitor then you are looking at prices in the thousands, sometimes up to £3000 plus.
If you bought a high quality monitor about 5 years ago it would be worthless today. If you purchased a 19" tft monitor for £250 5 years ago it would be worth about £20 today. This goes to show how much better you can get things for in this day and age.
Printers
Printers have evolved loads since they were first brought out. When they were first created there were Dot Matrix printers and Ink Jet printers. These were very basic printers and very slow. These printers used to be very expensive for their time. If you wanted to buy one now then you could easily get one for about £10 or £20. The only problem with these printers is that they take a very, very long time to print. Some early printers could only print about 1 page a minute. Printers now can print 20-30 pages a minute. This goes to show how much they have evolved and how printers have been upgraded. The only problem is that quality printers can cost about £80 to around £200.
There are also a lot of new printers that are currently being made. HP have produced new printers and are part of the company's "Print 2.0" strategy, which looks at delivering a next-generation digital printing platform that increases print speeds and lowers the cost and make it easier to print from the web.
